"A tale of two debates "

Hi there, and welcome to my second blog entry!

It is a herculean effort to stay in shape on campaigns. In between the long days and the greasy food it is easy to pack on the pounds. So under orders from my campaign team, I will be wearing my pedometer to manage my activity level during the day! I checked at the end of my day today and was shocked to see that I had walked 7000 steps which is about 5km!image!

Today I had two debates. Unlike the federal and provincial elections, mayoralty elections, have an incredible amount of debates on diverse geographic and policy issues. So far we have close to 30 scheduled debates versus 4 on the federal level! It is a lot of work to prepare for them all, but I relish the opportunity to bring my message and my vision directly to the people of Ottawa.

The first debate of the day was the National Building Associations Mayoral Candidates luncheon. This was a good opportunity for me to talk about the benefits of light rail, and the other infrastructure investments I have made as mayor, to the business and construction communities.

The second debate was the Kanata/ Stittsville/ Richmond/ West Carleton Debate. This debate was exciting and gave me the opportunity to defend the light rail project against unfair claims of dishonesty and lack of transparency. Minister Baird’s unprecedented move to delay light rail until the new council has certainly presented a challenge, but I have been the mayor for two terms, steered through an imageamalgamation, guided the city through the ice storm and I will display the same leadership to ensure that light rail comes to Ottawa!

I would also like to urge you all to come to the upcoming debates in your community. I would love to have the opportunity to address your concerns and demonstrate why I deserve your support on Nov. 13th. Now off to study for the next debate – and maybe a quick snack!
