Day 3
October 11th, 2006

"Home is where your barber is "

Today started with an early morning coffee with Child Care Community leaders at the campaign office. I have always been a strong advocate for affordable childcare and it was a good opportunity to hear the recent developments and concerns of this community and to help explore options to solve them. Like many Canadians I was very disappointed at Stephen Harper’s decision to cancel the Liberal Childcare program, and have subsequently been advocating strongly for the re-examination of this issue from all levels of government.City of Ottawa

Over the last couple of days I have had Citizen reporter Ron Corbett following me around while he writes his feature on me, and my candidacy, for the Saturday edition. So with him and a photographer in tow I went to get my haircut at my long time friend and barber’s shop in Carlingwood mall. While getting my hair cut we chatted about growing up on Preston street, being part of a big family, pick up hockey games in the winter, delving into some of the things that make me love this city and why I am so proud to call Ottawa my home.

For the majority of the remainder of the day I was at Council. I very much enjoy Council days - it reminds me of why I love this job. Sitting in the mayor’s chair and advocating for the different and diverse communities around this city, I am humbled by the responsibility of being Mayor. It is the varied nature of these diverse communities that makes this job so challenging and rewarding. Finding comprimageomise and passing legislation requires consensus created by strong leadership. This is something I strive to bring to Council chambers every day and something I think my opponents greatly underestimate - provocative rhetoric is no substitute for sound management.

I ended the work day having dinner with Osgoode community leaders at the Red Dot Cafe in Osgoode. Ottawa’s rural communities are a very important part of our cities mosaic. I try to take every opportunity I can to travel to the different communities and express my vision and hear feedback that can help shape and strengthen these communities and our city.

My last stop was one I had been looking forward to all day. I spent an hour having tea with my daughters. Often in these busy days it is good to have a solid grounding force like family.

Until tomorrow – good night! Make sure to read my feature this weekend in the Citizen!

P.S I forgot – I only made it 3.9 km today – no snack tonight!

P.P.S We are orgaizing a large sign effort for the weeks to come so if you would like a sign please click here and we will get one to you right away!
