Day 4
October 12th, 2006

"A conservative day... "

This morning I did a two-hour debate on CFRA. I hope you all got a chance to listen in as I believe it was one of the better debates of the campaign. We had the opportunity to discuss a whole range of issues – obviously one of the more pressing and commented on is the light rail project. I would like to take this opportunity to re-iterate that this light rail plan is the best one for this city. Ouimager democratically elected City Council overwhelmingly approved its current design and ratified the contract. I am willing to make light rail a pivotal campaign issue, and I relish the opportunity to defend it against its detractors over the next month. If you would like to know more about light rail click here.

I spent the afternoon prepping for the National Business Alliance Debate, and dealing with the media fallout of Minister Bairds ill-timed decision. I have a real sense that the people of Ottawa are angry about this type of interference and they need to see their mayor defending their interests, so I spent much of my day doing interviews and writing letters and editorials on this issue – fighting for this city’s light rail project.

The Business Alliance Debate was great! Not only was it a good crowd and lively debate but it gave me the prefect venue to announce my tax plan. I have promised to vote against any budget that asks for a tax increase of more than 1.8%. I have proven that this number is attainable, and unlike my opponents, I have a record of wrestling down tax increases and delivering balanced budgets while investing and securing core services. I can promise real city investments, in the envirCity of Ottawaonment, on transit, on keeping our streets safer, even with such a marginal tax increase – something my opponents cannot promise. You can read more about my tax plan and my fiscal record here.

Been a long day and I am off to bed, I guess I did a lot of running around today because my pedometer reads 4.3 km!

Good night.
