Day 5
October 13th, 2006

"Ciao e Benvenuto! "

Today was a busy day! StartedCity of Ottawa at 8:30 this morning with the Mayor’s United Way friends and Leaders Breakfast at City Hall. Immediately following the breakfast a reporter representing the West-End community newspapers interviewed me about West end Issues. It was a great opportunity for me to articulate what I have done, as Mayor, for the west end communities, and what my vision for this community is for the future.

In the afternoon I dropped in on the Islamic Info centre to say hello to some of my friends in that community. One of the advantages of Mayor is the ability to meet and interact with various community organizations around this city. There are thousands of people around Ottawa who really advocate and participate in their community; whether it be being an active member of a community association, or part of multicultural organization, the city could not be as great as it is without these incredible community focused leaders. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for making my job as Mayor so enjoyabimagele and fulfilling.

After the drop in I headed back to the West end to attend the Official Launch of the Fundraising Campaign for the Francophone Multi-Service center in the West-End. After a quick bite to eat at home I headed to the Reception for the Montfort Hospital Foundation Gala. I have been a strong partner in helping the Monfort hospital fundraise, and I will continue to do so. It is a great cause, and a great hospital.

My evening ended at the Village Reunion on Preston Street. It is an annual function for those  who grew up together on Preston street to reunite. I got to talk and swap stories with many old friends, several of whom I had not seen in many years. I think it is important for everyone to remember and honour the neighborhood and community in which they were raised. It is an integral part of your personal heritage, and is certainly something to be cherished.

I made it about 7500 steps today which is a bit over 5km. Guess I worked off some of that Italian food!

Until tomorrow, arrivederci!
