Mayor Chiarelli Wants More Soccer Fields and More Kids Playing Soccer
OTTAWA, October 23, 2006 - Today, Mayor Chiarelli announced his plan to construct 100 soccer fields over the next four years.
Bob Chiarelli, in partnership with community groups and soccer clubs, will construct 100 full- and kid-sized soccer fields throughout our City. The objective is to increase physical activity among youth and to provide more recreational options for Ottawa residents.
"The City is already redoubling its promotion of physical fitness among youth but we need to do more," said Chiarelli. "Soccer is growing in popularity and Ottawa residents will be going soccer crazy with the FIFA U-20 World Cup here in Ottawa next year."
Studies have found that four out of five adolescents do not participate in the recommended amount of physical activity. Incorporating regular physical activity in the everyday lives of our children and youth is key to promoting active lifestyles and long-term health.
"It is also my intention to declare soccer Ottawa's official sport in 2007, to coincide with the FIFA tournament," said Chiarelli.
"This initiative will help ensure that every child, youth or adolescent who wants to play soccer can. As a city we need to get out and get fit," concluded Chiarelli.
